Patch-up signal: Akhilesh, Shivpal share dais for first time in 6 years | India News – Times of India

LUCKNOW: Samajwadi Party (SP) chief Akhilesh Yadav and uncle Shivpal Yadav shared poll stage Sunday for the first time in six years to stake claim to Mulayam Singh Yadav’s legacy, signalling from the Etawah platform the end of their “political differences” and terming the December 5 bypoll in the patriarch’s seat Mainpuri as their united fight for “honour”.
As the two sought support for Akhilesh’s wife and SP candidate Dimple, Shivpal called Akhilesh a torchbearer of Mulayam’s principles. The SP chief, too, was unequivocal in praising his uncle while claiming he had only political differences with “chachaji” and these were gone now.
The Sunday afternoon event showcased a coming together of the two not seen in recent memory. As Akhilesh arrived, Shivpal’s son Aditya welcomed him and touched his feet. Akhilesh stepped onto the stage and touched Shivpal’s feet as the crowds cheered. Shivpal then welcomed Akhilesh with a bouquet, and the nephew again bent to seek his “Chacha’s” blessings.
In political circles, the development was seen as Shivpal’s attempt to reiterate his commitment to Mulayam’s legacy and the Yadav clan, and Akhilesh softening his stance for possible rapprochement with his uncle.
In his speech, Akhilesh conceded that people used to talk about their differences. “There were no differences between uncle and nephew … the differences were in politics … I am happy that even those differences have ended today, for which I am very thankful,” Akhilesh told the gathering.
Shivpal reciprocated and pointed out that this was the first election after the death of “Netaji (Mulayam)” on October 10. He cast on Akhilesh the task of “carrying forward the responsibility” that the patriarch “left on all of us”.
