F1 2022: Verstappen takes pole at Abu Dhabi GP: Vettel to start his last Formula 1 race from P9 – Times of India

For the penultimate race of the 2022 season, i.e. the Abu Dhabi Grand Prix, Formula 1 heads to the 5.281 km long Yas Marina Circuit in the United Arab Emirates. This will be the last Formula 1 race for four-time World Champion Sebastian Vettel, with the German having decided to retire at the end of the season. The former Red Bull Racing and Scuderia Ferrari driver is set to take P9 on the grid tomorrow.
Meanwhile Max Verstappen starts from pole position, which makes it the 20th pole of his career. After going the fastest in Q3, Red Bull Racing managed to lock out the front grid. Sergio Perez would be hoping to finish ahead of Ferrari’s Charles Leclerc to take second position in the Driver’s Championship which is currently tied between the two at 290 points each.

Max Verstappen was the fastest in Q1 with a lap time of 1:24.754, followed by teammate Sergio Perez on second, +0.066s behind. Ferrari drivers Carlos Sainz and Charles Leclerc on fourth and fifth respectively, while Lando Norris took 6th. Kevin Magnussen, Pierre Gasly, Valtteri Bottas, Alexander Albon and Nicholas Latifi were eliminated in the first qualifying.

It was Sergio Perez who went fastest in the second qualifying, setting a lap time of 1:24.419, ahead of Leclerc and Sainz. Max Verstappen took fourth, right ahead of Lewis Hamilton on fifth. Fernando Alonso, Yuki Tsunoda, Mick Schumacher, Lance Stroll and Zhou Guanyu did not make it to the final qualifying of the day.

Max Verstappen managed to take yet another pole after going fastest in the final qualifying with a time of 1:23.824, with Sergio Perez behind him, completing a Red Bull 1-2. Charles Leclerc and Carlos Sainz will be lined up on the second row on the grid, ahead of Lewis Hamilton and George Russell in P5 and P6 respectively.
McLaren’s Lando Norris takes P7 tomorrow, meanwhile Alpine’s Esteban Ocon starts from 8th. 4-time World Champion Sebastian Vettel takes P9 in his last Formula 1 race at the 2022 Abu Dhabi Grand Prix. While Daniel Ricciardo completed the top 10 in qualifying, he will be serving a three-place grid penalty for causing a collision at the Sao Paulo Grand Prix last weekend.
