ECI shunts out Gujarat assembly poll observer for ‘publicity stunt’ | Ahmedabad News – Times of India

AHMEDABAD: A UP cadre IAS officer, who was appointed as a general observer for the Gujarat assembly poll, has been removed for indulging in a “publicity stunt”.
Abhishek Singh, who was an observer for Asarwa and Bapunagar assembly constituencies in Ahmedabad, has been relieved from duty. Singh, a 2011-batch officer, posted pictures of his assignment as observer on his social media handles, posing with the vehicle that has been allotted to him and also with other personnel, including a cop.
In a strongly worded letter to the Chief Electoral Officer (CEO) of Gujarat on Friday, the ECI said Abhishek Singh used Instagram to share his posting as a general observer and used his official position for “publicity stunts”. The IAS officer had uploaded the same pictures on his Twitter handle with the text, “Joined Ahmedabad as Observer for Gujarat Elections”. Singh describes himself as a public servant, actor, social entrepreneur and stubborn optimist on his Instagram and Twitter handles.
The poll panel also shared with the CEO the pictures uploaded by the officer on the social media platforms, the sources said. Citing the EC communication, sources said the poll panel took “a very serious view” of the matter and relieved Singh immediately of his duties as a general observer. He has also been debarred from any electionrelated duty till further orders. The officer was also directed to immediately leave the constituency of which he was given the responsibility and report to his nodal officer in the parent cadre.
All government facilities provided to him to facilitate the discharge of his observer duties be withdrawn, the letter said, according to the sources.
CEO Gujarat P Bharathi said the officer has been relieved of the charge of observer of Asarwa and Bapunagar assembly constituencies. “The action has been taken according to ECI instructions,” she said. Prashant Narnvare was later appointed in Singh’s place.
