Despite norm, Kharge may continue as LoP | India News – Times of India

NEW DELHI: As suspense continues over the appointment of the next Leader of Opposition in Rajya Sabha, the key question is if Congress president Mallikarjun Kharge may continue in the post that he resigned from recently in keeping with the “one man one post” norm.
With the winter session of Parliament set to start from December 7, a senior Congress member said ‘Bharat Jodo Yatra’ will continue with full participation and added that main players — RahulGandhi, Digvijaya Singh and Jairam Ramesh — were unlikely to attend the session.
Singh is seen a front-runner for the post of the Leader of Opposition while Ramesh is also a contender. Former Union ministers P Chidambaram and Mukul Wasnik are in the race too, as is multipleterm legislator Pramod Tiwari. However, with Kharge becoming the Congress president, it is said that a leader from north India will stand better chance to replace him. However, the potential absence of senior members from the upcoming Parliament session has led to speculations if Kharge may continue despite his resignation.
Sources said the appointment of the Leader of Opposition in RS will be made by Sonia Gandhi in her capacity as the chairperson of the Congress Parliamentary Party.
An AICC office-bearer said, “A decision will be made closer to the Parliament session. ”
