Coimbatore & Mangaluru blasts linked? Cops probe IS angle | India News – Times of India

COIMBATORE: Tamil Nadu police are trying to piece together a possible connection between a man killed in the October 3 Coimbatore bomb blast and the wounded mastermind of an autorickshaw explosion in Karnataka’s Mangaluru on Saturday —both suspected sympathisers of terrorist group IS.
Police found that Mangaluru accused H Mohammed Shariq, 24, had visited the Singanallur neighbourhood of Coimbatore this September, stayed in a dorm, and got a SIM card by producing an Aadhaar copy of a schoolteacher he had befriended in the city.
The 28-year-old teacher of a private school, who is a native of Thummanatty in the Nilgiris district, has been detained for questioning after Karnataka police seized the SIM registered in his name that blast accused Shariq has been using.
According to police, it could be more than a coincidence that Shariq visited the Tamil Nadu city days before a car explosion in front of the Sangameswarar temple that killed Jamesha Mubeen, 29, a mechanical engineer who had hopped several jobs after working in a Bengaluru-based firm.
Were the two associates? “We are trying to find if there was a link between Mubeen and Shariq. Both were IS sympathisers. Our police teams are trying to get more information from the dormitory where Shariq stayed at Singanallur,” an officer said.
Sources said Shariq had his first brush with the law two years ago when he and U Sadath Hussain, 50—both from Thirthahalli at Shivamogga in Karnataka—were arrested for allegedly spray-painting on a wall terrorist threats like “Don’t force us to invite Lashkar-e-Taiba and Taliban to deal with Sanghis and Manvedis. Lashkar Zindabad”. He was also accused of writing slogans that warned of beheading anyone speaking blasphemy against the Prophet.
They were given conditional bail in July 2021 and Shariq disappeared thereafter. But he is said to be working stealthily and Saturday’s blast was a consequence of that. Police said Shariq had hired the autorickshaw and was carrying a low-intensity IED. A burnt pressure cooker fitted with batteries was found in the vehicle.
