BJP vs Congress vs AAP: Gujarat election campaign nears a climax

Electioneering in Gujarat is peaking this week with the top guns of BJP, Congress and AAP camping in the state. Of course, BJP has laid out its full arsenal starting with PM Modi and HM Shah and many members of the Union cabinet and state chief ministers. Congress has finally secured the services of Rahul Gandhi, but only for two days. Delhi chief minister Arvind Kejriwal is also in the state.

Analysts are indicating that the three way split in votes will benefit BJP. BJP’s unstoppable March in Gujarat is now quite close to beating the Left Front record in Bengal. While CPM ruled Bengal for 33 straight years, BJP has won every election in Gujarat since 1995 and ruled continuously for 24 years. The biggest positive for BJP is the Modi factor. The PM is a relentless campaigner during elections. In contrast, Rahul’s absence has been a big letdown for Congress. BJP has also taken care of the caste calculus by fronting a Patidar as its CM face, ensuring that the community’s grievances that boiled to the surface in 2017 isn’t repeating this time.

The AAP rise in Gujarat has added a new dimension to Gujarat politics, which has seen the same trend of BJP staying ahead of Congress for over two decades now. While Congress has fallen short in mustering enough seats in cities to pull ahead of BJP, AAP has been attractive to urban voters ever since its inception. With Kejriwal taking soft Hindutva stances, flagging to Congress voters the party’s repeated failure to unseat BJP, and betting big on freebies, he is offering voters a distinct alternative.

The winner in 2022 will head to the 2024 Lok Sabha elections with a huge advantage. No surprises then that BJP is leaving no stone unturned to ensure it betters the 127 seat victory of 2002.
